HTML And The Custom Portal Modules
The capability to add a custom Portal to your Forum is one of the unique features that sets ForumWise above other hosts. This capability can be further enhanced with the introduction of HTML to the Portals custom content areas.
There are a few basic recommendations when adding HTML to your custom areas that should be followed. In fact anytime you are editing your custom content areas, be it with HTML code or not, it would be wise to follow these recommendations.
Always prior to beginning your edit open a text utility on your machine. MSWord, NotePad or any similar program will work well. Copy, paste and save all of the text from your custom areas to the utility you have elected to use. This execrise serves as a simple back up to your custom areas in the event your text and/or code is lost or altered. Now you can begin your edit in relative safety.
In the event that you add HTML to your custom custom area that causes an error in the layout of your Portal, don't panic. The steps below will guide you though restoring your Portal.
Recovering from an error in your Portal HTML
(1). Open your Administration Panel.
(2). Scroll down the Index to the General Admin Panel.
(3). Select the Portal Config option.
(4). The Portal Configuration panel is now open in the right portion of your screen. Scroll to each Portal Module individually and follow these steps:
With your text utility open copy and paste the text from each Module into the text utility. We would suggest you name a text file for each Module you are utilizing. (As an example if you are using NotePad as your text utility, title the open Notepad "Welcome Module". Copy, paste and save the text from the Welcome Module into the Notepad, save it to your desktop or location of your choice that you can easily relocate - follow this procedure for each Module using the Modules name to identify the text you are saving).
(5). After all the custom text has been saved, you can now return to the Portal Configuration Panel and reset the text (Reset Text is highlighted in blue to the left of each Module) in each of your Modules. This action will return the custom areas to their default. Meaning they will appear just as they did when the Portal option was originally activated.
(6). You are now ready to identify the HTML code or text that resulted in the improper display of your homepage.
(7). First verify that you have reset the text in each Module field by clicking the submit button located at the lower portion of the Portal configuration page, then returning to your homepage to verify the page is displaying properly - or within its margins.
(8). Return to the Portal Configuration panel, open the Notepad you have titled "Welcome Module" and copy and paste the saved text back into the Modules text field. Scroll to the bottom of the page and submit this change - do not add your other Modules text at this point, only the Welcome text. Return to your homepage and verify proper display. If the page displays within its margins or as it normally did prior to editing the Modules, then you know the HTML in this area is not the source of the problem.
(9). Repeat this procedure with each successive Module, exactly as it is outlined here, add no more than one Module at a time between verification of homepage display. Eventually this procedure will identify the Module that contains the improper code. When you have identified the Module you can then edit the HTML or text to eliminate the problem.
