Is it possible for me to edit my navigation buttons like the one on this page:

I really like that style and would like to incorporate it into my portal page.

If they did it so can you. View the source code to get an idea of how they facilitated it.

You need to disable the Navigation Module, and edit your Top Left Custom Module with the buttons and links you want.
